Biography

David Angelo Calabrese was always an artist in one way or another. From the time of childhood David would slather the refrigerator with several pieces of art ranging from Transformers, to Robotech, to GI Joe, and finally to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It was a trait and passion that was handed down genetically from both parents. Through his younger days David was heavily influenced by comic book artists (as most young boys are) like Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, & Erik Larsen. That inspiration led to David being one of several young artists to receive the United States National Art Award from the United States Achievement Academy in 1995.

A few years later he discovered the art of Mike Ploog. This spurred an interest in "finer" art. In 1999 David was nominated and awarded the Connecticut Association of Schools Fourth Annual Outstanding Arts Award. Soon enough, after some good inspiration, he applied and was accepted to the Hartford Art School (University of Hartford) in West Hartford Connecticut.

At Hartford David discovered acrylics, oils, watercolors, figure drawing, sculpture, and graphic design. All the things an aspiring artist could ever want. He studied under great talents such as Doug Andersen, Bill Thomson, Fred Wessel, and Jeremiah Patterson.

It was here under the guidance of his instructors did David learn to appreciate and understand art. It was also here that he learned to manipulate media and finalize a tangible result. During this time the seed of David's Freelance profession was planted. At Hartford he discovered artists like Howard Pyle, Frank Frazetta, and Salvador Dali. All of whom had a great inspirational impact on the young and growing artist.

During his undergraduate years David realized that he too wanted to enter the field of instructing and "do for other students what his instructors did for him". In 2003 David graduated a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from the Hartford Art School. He recieved Cum' Lade honors.

Later that year at a chance meeting, David stumbled upon the studio of established artist Marek Czarnecki. Soon after, thanks to the kindness of Marek, David found himself working along side of the artist himself as an assistant. David assisted Marek in the restoration of religious works. As David puts it, "It was a great opportunity and honor to work along side of such a talented and passionate artist. I can never thank him enough for giving me an opportunity. Thank you Marek". It was there at Seraphic Restorations that David learned several techniques with media that which he now uses in his current method of painting.

In the latter part of 2003 David entered the Savannah College of Art & Design as a graduate student. In a radical deviation from traditional art, David entered the digital world of 3D modeling & animation. After three years of studying under instructors like Greg Johnson, and Aram Cookson, David graduated in March 2006 as a Master of Fine Arts in Interactive Design and Game Development.

David has since gone on to work as an instructor at The Art Institute of Las Vegas, a Multimedia Designer at Magic Gaming (Tournament One Corp.) and continued his freelance by working with companies such as Clear Crown Studios and New Blood Productions.
